Finland and Sweden the two most prominent non-allied nations have finally gotten clearance from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and soon become full members of the NATO alliance. Long before the world wars, Sweden and Finland stayed neutral and didn’t join any major wars. But there was the famous Winter War when Finland was invaded by Communist Russia in 1939 and ended in 1940 with the Moscow Peace Treaty. During the cold war and a series of NATO expansions, Sweden and Finland stayed neutral. But now, things have changed drastically with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As the threats from Russia towards the non-aligned especially the NATO members have increased dramatically, Finland and Sweden believe it would be better for them to join the NATO alliance and hope Russia won’t attack them. But when things come to President Putin, you can and should expect anything from him, even nuclear weapons falling over NATO territories.

As per media reports, Sweden and Finland will become NATO members by the end of this year, which will be happening in a record time. President Putin has already issued comments and direct threats toward these two nations but now his threat issuing intensity has dropped severely. But apart from Sweden and Finland joining NATO, Turkey or Turkey got the best deal out of this membership campaign. And this article is mainly about this deal. President Erdogan made the NATO members fulfill his demands for new military hardware, lifting some bans and most importantly purging the Kurdish who have taken shelter in Sweden and Finland. He did all this while smoothly backstabbing President Putin. For anyone who wants to learn Politics, President Erdogan has some good lessons for them. These deals can give Erdogan the required push he needs to win the general elections going to take place in Turkey next year. Just like any other dictator who purges innocent, Erdogan’s new way of purging the Kurds can get him the votes from hardliners in the country.

But there is a lot more going on in this new deal. Stick to the last we will discuss all of them one by one.

Sweden and Finland’s Point of View:

Just like Ukraine, Finland shares a land border with Russia, while Sweden is connected with Russia through narrow channels and the Baltic sea. So, their worries about getting invaded by Russia increased after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This time, NATO 29 members out of 30, tried their best to push for their immediate joining of the military alliance. But Turkey was the only NATO member that blocked their joining the group. But during a Coffee Break, they finally struck a deal with Erdogan and were willing to deport the Kurds, especially the members of the Kurdish Workers Party or the PKK. Turkey is putting immense pressure on Sweden and Finland to hand over 33 suspects or Kurd people as soon as possible. In Sweden, there are more than 100,000 and in Finland, 16,000 Kurdish people live. Sweden has several lawmakers in the Parliament will they deport them too?

NATO’s founding charter promises democracy and individual freedom, but when hypocrisy takes over, you will always choose to deport people who have taken shelter in your nation to avoid prosecution, torture, and ethnic cleansing. Apart from the Jews, Hindus, and Yazidis, the Kurds are the most tortured sect of humanity. Kurds are basically Sunni Muslims but due to their sect, they get immense torture in their homelands in Iraq, Iran, and Turkey. Former Dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hossain, rose to power by running several ethnic cleansing operations over the Kurdish people.

On the other hand, Finland and Sweden use weapons mainly made in NATO countries like the USA, Germany, and France. So, when the war comes their existing weapon systems can easily be usable by other NATO members and soldiers.

USA’s Point of View:

No matter what you think, the USA is the backbone and brain of NATO. President Biden has promised Turkey to provide new F-16 Jets for this ‘generous’ concession to Sweden and Finland.

We can only ask President Biden; in the name of democracy will he arm and lift several bans which are currently imposed on Turkey and let the Kurds get ethnically cleansed from the face of the earth by their oppressors?

The human rights in Turkey cannot be found even with microscopes, is it a good time to arm them with new military hardware? That is our question to the USA.

Turkey’s Point of View:

Turkey or President Erdogan came out as the biggest winner in this deal. His deals with NATO, Finland, and Sweden turned out to be remarkable and game-changing for his election campaigns. We may need a whole article just to signify how big of a deal he made. But here today we will discuss only the most important points.

1. Turkey gets a green signal from the USA on F-16 Fighter Jet deals. Turkey will get new jets as well as upgrades from the USA.

2. Erdogan can get Kurds to be deported to Turkey whenever he wants, as many as he wants and the starting number is 73 from Sweden.

3. Sweden and Finland will also lift the bans over Turkey. Now, Erdogan can buy as many weapons as he wants from these two Nordic Nations.

4. The USA, UK, and EU may lift some bans over Turkey, and this way Turkish Lira can improve its position. This will improve Erdogan’s position as lifting bans will improve the Turkish Lira and Business in Turkey.

On the other hand, Russia couldn’t do anything as Turkey is a NATO member. But as we know about President Putin, backstabbing him never went well for his adversaries. It is also a lesson for Finland and Sweden on collective defense deals. Now, Turkey may resume its supply of TB2 Drones to Ukraine. Turkey may also improve its financial conditions as the country is facing soaring inflation, currently striking at 79% which is the highest in decades.

Russia’s Point of View:

Russia or President Putin said, it is fine for Finland and Sweden joining NATO but he won’t sit back and relax if NATO starts to build up defense infrastructure and retaliate.

Russia has also promised to match the troop buildups made by the NATO nations throughout the Russian border state. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, NATO increased its 100,000 troops in Europe.

Final Take:

India At War believes that Finland and Sweden joining NATO is a huge setback for President Putin’s cause. He started the invasion to threaten weaker nations preventing them to join NATO and get clout of Russia over other nations. But his calculations are seeming to backfire on him as NATO is getting two new members and the gap between NATO and Russian Territories decreases even further.
